Toronto Rock Lacrosse Tickets!

Wednesday, December 28th, 2016

I have five pairs of Toronto Rock Lacrosse tickets to give away!

The games take place at the Air Canada Centre and the seats are very good. Just tell me which ones you would like. A decision regarding who gets tickets will be made two weeks before each game and I will mail them to the lucky winner; while preference will be given to customers and those who tell me they’ve got a kid who plays lacrosse, anybody can win. If you win and don’t want your name publicized, that’s fine.

The games are:

Upgrade to PrefBlog Software; Problems with eMail

Monday, December 5th, 2016

Assiduous Readers will remember that I had problems with Live.com’s spam filters in February, 2016, which I addressed.

I now have more problems with these spam filters. I have been advised that the likely cause of the problem is registration-spam on PrefBlog; spammers open accounts with fake addresses and try to post comments; they are frustrated by earlier measures I took to eliminated comment-spam so they keep trying; and end up generating eMail sent to their fake addresses to tell them about their input errors.

For instance, late on Saturday evening, I had 143,601 registered users; now, about 38 hours later, I have 143,781 registrants. Canadian preferred shares have a global popularity I had never dreamed of!

So I have had to install another layer of protection around PrefBlog and in order to do this I had to upgrade PrefBlog’s software. I hate doing this because the WordPress organization is crammed full of teenagers who have never done a day’s work in their lives and therefore love to add features … ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we required all inputs to be in Hungarian and then applied automatic translation to them? Awesome!’ So I’m probably in for another month of frustration as nothing will work the way it has before. Can’t wait.

However, my eMail problem will probably be solved, for a little while, until the industry’s big boys figure out a new way to force independent operators to use their services. All this nonsense could have been avoided twenty years ago by instituting a nominal charge for eMail, with a refund granted for eMail receipts (with various limits) that, for individuals, would almost always net out to zero. But the hippies didn’t like this; they interrupted their dope-smoking free-love vegetarian bead-making orgies for just long enough to whine that the Internet should be free and as a result we have expensive annoying messes like this. Hippies ruined the internet!

If you have any problems registering or signing in, please let me know and I’ll try to figure out how to fix it. I am hopeful that I will again be able to send eMail to live.com addresses in the near future.

eMail Cash Transfers Enabled for MAPF Distributions; Fees; PrefLetter Subscriptions

Thursday, December 1st, 2016

I am pleased to announce that I have now enabled electronic banking for Hymas Investment Management Inc. (HIMI) in a fairly modest way, and can now transfer small amounts of money by Interac eMail Transfer. Not large amounts of money, because I remain deeply suspicious of the security and guarantees protecting against fraud and hacking, but small amounts are just fine.

If you wish to transfer money to or from HIMI, please contact me for details. Note that having MAPF distributions sent to you in this manner will require some paperwork for which I require originals by mail.

Server Problems Mostly Fixed; PrefLetter Coming Soon

Tuesday, September 13th, 2016

Well it’s been a nightmare, but my month-long server problems appear to be coming to an end.

The problem, I believe, was Plesk, a server maintenance utility that works with Windows. Fixing my eMail did horrible things to all the server’s other functions. I have now moved back to Linux/cPanel; I have much more faith in cPanel as a server utility because it’s a purpose-built programme; my understanding is that Plesk is largely a collection of third-party utilities licensed and gathered under one roof, with the result that not only are things not always in alignment, but that problems tend to bog down in spaghetti code.

But my server now seems to be fixed except for one problem: I can receive eMail, but I can’t currently send it! I hope to have this resolved shortly.

On a related note, PrefLetter for September is now at the typesetter’s office and will be ready soon. The long-overdue August edition will be appended to it – subscribers will be charged for only one issue.

Continued Delay For August PrefLetter

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016

As previously noted, my server has recently been “upgraded” ha-ha.

While my regular eMail now works the PrefLetter functionality, which uses PHP code on the server to send eMail, has been broken by this upgrade.

I am working to get PrefLetter out as soon as possible.

Server Maintenance

Wednesday, August 10th, 2016

I’ve been having problems with my eMail for the past week and my consultant tells me that the best way to fix it – now that the patches have been shown to be insufficient – is to upgrade everything.

So all my websites, including this one, will be down for a short period this evening: probably about half an hour. If you have sent me an eMail in the past week and are wondering why nothing has happened, please resend the eMail tomorrow!

Apology Re Timeliness

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016

Readers will have noticed that there has still not been a report of January performance by the fund, nor a review of the January performance of low-spread FixedResets (although performance for the fund was reported in PrefLetter).

Additionally, formal account statements for Malachite Aggressive Preferred Fund and segregated accounts have not yet been mailed.

I apologize for this.

February was horrendous in terms of keeping up; the year-end audit has been very time-consuming and the market has kept me on my toes as well. Throughout the month I was looking forward to the weekend of February 27-28, thinking that production would be very late, but at least done during the month.

Regrettably, a personal emergency blew up February 26 at about 9pm and occupied all my time until Monday. So much for the weekend!

I hope to get caught up on this coming weekend, March 5-6.

Live.com’s Spam Filters Out of Control!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016

It has become apparent that Microsoft has completely lost control over its servers.

I’ve been getting more than a few eMails bounced back recently, of the form:

Recipient: [SMTP: [eMail address redacted]]
Reason: 550 SC-001 (SNT004-MC2F3) Unfortunately, messages from 184.172.98.210 weren’t sent. Please contact your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block list. You can also refer your provider to http://mail.live.com/mail/troubleshooting.aspx#errors.

This appears to affect eMails directed to @live.com and @Hotmail.com. There may be more, but I haven’t seen any bounce-backs from other domains yet.

I don’t know quite what to make of this. I have contacted my Server Wizard and hope that the situation will be resolved shortly.

In the interim, however, I cannot respond to eMails originating from these domains. All my eMail from each of my domains (including automatically generated eMail from PrefBlog and PrefLetter) is routed through the server at 184.172.98.210.

I apologize for the inconvenience and hope to have this situation resolved promptly.

Addition to Blogroll: Ben Bernanke’s Blog

Saturday, April 18th, 2015

I have added Ben Bernanke’s blog to the blogroll – see the right-hand navigation panel under the heading “Recommended External Commentary.

This blog was inaugurated on March 30; I’m very pleased to see that Bernanke has joined the Brookings Institute, a US think-tank with heterogeneous funding.
