{"id":28419,"date":"2015-03-27T16:20:40","date_gmt":"2015-03-27T21:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/prefblog.com\/?p=28419"},"modified":"2015-03-27T16:20:40","modified_gmt":"2015-03-27T21:20:40","slug":"new-link-us-office-of-financial-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prefblog.com\/?p=28419","title":{"rendered":"New Link: US Office of Financial Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Office of Financial Research <a href=\"http:\/\/financialresearch.gov\/press-releases\/2015\/02\/03\/ofr-launches-new-website\/\">has announced<\/a> that it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> launched a new website [February 3, 2015] to provide policy makers and the public better access to the OFR\u2019s high-quality data and independent analysis that helps to promote financial stability.<\/p>\n<p>The new website is at www.financialresearch.gov.<\/p>\n<p>The OFR was established by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act to provide research, data, and analysis for the benefit of the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC), Council member agencies, Congress, and the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe launch of our new website marks a new chapter for the OFR,\u201d OFR Director Richard Berner said. \u201cThis stand-alone site promotes transparency and accountability, and it greatly enhances our ability to provide to the public the results of our efforts to assess and monitor threats to financial stability, to fill in the gaps in financial analysis and data, and to evaluate policy tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new site contains a \u201cDirectors Blog,\u201d biographies of senior managers, and details about OFR initiatives to collect financial data and improve data quality. The site also provides the OFR\u2019s annual reports, working papers, staff discussion papers, and other research and analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Other information on the website includes:<br \/>\n\u2022An inventory of the financial data purchased, collected, and developed by FSOC member agencies;<br \/>\n\u2022Updates on the OFR\u2019s leadership on the Legal Entity Identifier, or LEI, a global data standard like a bar code for identifying parties to financial transactions; and<br \/>\n\u2022Information about the OFR\u2019s Financial Research Advisory Committee, which helps the OFR develop and employ best practices for data management, data standards, and research methodologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new website helps us create our own, unique identity \u2013 which is critical for ensuring the integrity, objectivity, and independence of our work,\u201d Berner said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I have always admired the quality of research published by various arms of the US government. To be sure, every now and then something is highly politicized &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/nsarchive.gwu.edu\/NSAEBB\/NSAEBB80\/\">weapons of mass destruction in Iraq come readily to mind<\/a> &#8211; and even on a more mundane level, I have criticized the <a href=\"http:\/\/prefblog.com\/?p=12397\">SEC&#8217;s report on the Flash Crash<\/a> as serving more of a political than analytical purpose. But by and large, you can learn a lot from research sponsored and published by the US government.<\/p>\n<p>I have added a link to the site on the right-hand navigation panel, under the heading &#8220;Recommended Official Sites&#8221;.
