{"id":6287,"date":"2009-04-22T14:12:51","date_gmt":"2009-04-22T18:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prefblog.com\/?p=6287"},"modified":"2009-04-22T14:12:51","modified_gmt":"2009-04-22T18:12:51","slug":"fdic-releases-4q08-banking-profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prefblog.com\/?p=6287","title":{"rendered":"FDIC Releases 4Q08 Banking Profile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/bank\/analytical\/quarterly\/index.html\">has announced<\/a> the release of the 4Q08 Banking Profile, containing two feature articles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/bank\/analytical\/quarterly\/2009_vol3_1\/FDIC140_Recession_FINAL.pdf\">How the Recession is Unfolding across Four US Regions<\/a>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/bank\/analytical\/quarterly\/2009_vol3_1\/FDIC140_QuarterlyVol3No1_AFS_FINAL.pdf\">Alternative Financial Services: A Primer<\/a><\/ul>\n<p>The guts of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/bank\/analytical\/quarterly\/2009_vol3_1\/Quarterly_Vol3No1_entire_issue_FINAL.pdf\">the full report<\/a> is the report of banking system statistical information, which begins with the cheery sentence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>FDIC-insured institutions reported a net loss of $32.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008, a decline of $32.7 billion from the $575 million that the industry earned in the fourth quarter of 2007 and the first quarterly loss since 1990. Rising loan loss provisions, large writedowns of goodwill and other assets, and sizable losses in trading accounts all contributed to the industry\u2019s net loss.
