Another eMail Problem

Just when I thought the end of the nightmare was close, I find I have another eMail server problem, with junk eMails apparently being sent from my main address, jiHymas@himivest.com.

The mailServer programme on my “websites” machine has now been turned off until I figure out what is going on.

I have sent an urgent message to my website administrator; until further notice, please use my backup eMail address, jiHymas@himipref.com, which is hosted on another server.

Update, 2025-06-30: This issue has been resolved. I hope.

Toronto Rock Lacrosse Tickets!

I have five pairs of Toronto Rock Lacrosse tickets to give away!

The games take place at the Air Canada Centre and the seats are very good. Just tell me which ones you would like. A decision regarding who gets tickets will be made two weeks before each game and I will mail them to the lucky winner; while preference will be given to customers and those who tell me they’ve got a kid who plays lacrosse, anybody can win. If you win and don’t want your name publicized, that’s fine.

The games are:

The games are a lot of fun. One thing that has impressed me is that these guys’ technical skills are so good they can concentrate on strategy … there are a lot fewer loose balls than I remember from my days of box lacrosse at age 10!

To try your luck at receiving a pair of tickets, just eMail me or comment on this post.

eMail Cash Transfers Enabled for MAPF Distributions; Fees; PrefLetter Subscriptions

I am pleased to announce that I have now enabled electronic banking for Hymas Investment Management Inc. (HIMI) in a fairly modest way, and can now transfer small amounts of money by Interac eMail Transfer. Not large amounts of money, because I remain deeply suspicious of the security and guarantees protecting against fraud and hacking, but small amounts are just fine.

If you wish to transfer money to or from HIMI, please contact me for details. Note that having MAPF distributions sent to you in this manner will require some paperwork for which I require originals by mail.

Server Problems Mostly Fixed; PrefLetter Coming Soon

Well it’s been a nightmare, but my month-long server problems appear to be coming to an end.

The problem, I believe, was Plesk, a server maintenance utility that works with Windows. Fixing my eMail did horrible things to all the server’s other functions. I have now moved back to Linux/cPanel; I have much more faith in cPanel as a server utility because it’s a purpose-built programme; my understanding is that Plesk is largely a collection of third-party utilities licensed and gathered under one roof, with the result that not only are things not always in alignment, but that problems tend to bog down in spaghetti code.

But my server now seems to be fixed except for one problem: I can receive eMail, but I can’t currently send it! I hope to have this resolved shortly.

On a related note, PrefLetter for September is now at the typesetter’s office and will be ready soon. The long-overdue August edition will be appended to it – subscribers will be charged for only one issue.

Server Maintenance

I’ve been having problems with my eMail for the past week and my consultant tells me that the best way to fix it – now that the patches have been shown to be insufficient – is to upgrade everything.

So all my websites, including this one, will be down for a short period this evening: probably about half an hour. If you have sent me an eMail in the past week and are wondering why nothing has happened, please resend the eMail tomorrow!

Apology Re Timeliness

Readers will have noticed that there has still not been a report of January performance by the fund, nor a review of the January performance of low-spread FixedResets (although performance for the fund was reported in PrefLetter).

Additionally, formal account statements for Malachite Aggressive Preferred Fund and segregated accounts have not yet been mailed.

I apologize for this.

February was horrendous in terms of keeping up; the year-end audit has been very time-consuming and the market has kept me on my toes as well. Throughout the month I was looking forward to the weekend of February 27-28, thinking that production would be very late, but at least done during the month.

Regrettably, a personal emergency blew up February 26 at about 9pm and occupied all my time until Monday. So much for the weekend!

I hope to get caught up on this coming weekend, March 5-6.
